Travel Tips

Below are few tips or basic information for first time travellers to Kerala. Visitors can benefit from the below tips by having a hassle free and memorable vacation without spending a fortune. You can also use these as a checklist before you embark upon your holiday of dreams.

  1. Plan well in advance, ideally 15 days ahead. Booking a flight ticket in advance will save you 13 to 15% of your total ticket costs. If you are employed, apply for leaves ahead to prevent last minute disppointments and hard feelings.
  2. Take a package tour provided by a recognized tour operator. They have best knowledge of the region and hotels and can help you plan a perfect itinerary. It will help you save your valuable time as well as money. Based on their deals, hotels offer best rates to tour operators.
  3. Ask all possible questions to your travel agent about the car, houseboat and hotels.
  4. Take proper travel and medical insurance before visiting.
  5. Foreign customers, keep a photocopy of your passport, Indian visa and flight ticket separate from the originals when travelling, in case these get lost or stolen.
  6. Indian customers, keep any valid Govt. approved identity proof of yourselves for checking in to the hotels and airlines.
  7. Use strong suitcases/baggage, in case mishandling occurs at airports/stations.
  8. Prefer trains and buses over flights, if possible, as they are the cheapest option.
  9. Be careful about your luggage while you travel in train or in bus.
  10. It is always better to arrive one hour before scheduled departure at the train station and one and half hour before any domestic flight.
  11. Always chain and lock your luggage under your berth in a train. Do not keep anything valuable near the window. Always carry plenty of water, and fruits in trains.
  12. Do not eat anything offered by fellow travelers on train or road travels. Always travel reserved class in trains.
  13. While choosing car as an option for transportation make sure that your driver is trained and speak basic English.
  14. Do not trust strangers on the street. Trust your hotel and travel authorities, but not people you do not know of.
  15. Try to reach a station during daytime if traveling on your own.
  16. Beware of touts and taxi-drivers at airport/stations/bus stand to help you find your hotel. Always trust your travel agent for proper advice.
  17. Do not leave your cash and valuables in your hotel rooms.
  18. Keep your cash divided in different pockets.
  19. Do not accept offers of visiting anyone's home unless you are confident of the person.
  20. Tips are not necessary. If at all you do, do not tip unreasonably and unnecessarily in a hotel.
  21. Buy from genuine shops only. Bargaining is a popular practice in India, however do not bargain in shops that display "Fixed Price" signs
  22. Do consult proper authority before buying any ayurvedic medicines, because it might not be allowed to carry them to your home country.
  23. Be careful of cultural and social sensitivities of the regions. There is no single rule for that, the best way is to observe and follow.
  24. Plan well in advance about your departure. Try to arrive your destination station well in time, to avoid any last minute hassles.
